“There’s a real danger of the Trudeau government launching consultations that amount to bad dialogue — conversations in which people are heard, but never listen. Trudeau, an avowed fan of fiction, ought to realize this.
“All this said, we should be cautious about any suggestion that a referendum would amount to a true consultation with the Canadian public. For the record, I’m in favour of a referendum on any change to the voting system — in fact, I don’t see how the Trudeau government can avoid it — but it would have to be masterfully handled to qualify as a bona fide national conversation.”
